Why photography is a perfect hobby

Of all my hobbies photography definitely takes the top spot. In a way, it saved my mental health during some difficult times. It’s a source of joy and satisfaction. It has taken me to places I wouldn’t have reached without it.
Why else do I think photography is the perfect hobby for everyone?

1. It’s free

Of course, you can spend a ton of money on gear and accessories. But the basic camera that is more than enough to start your photography journey is already in your pocket. You can take amazing photos with your phone, and that’s the best place to start this adventure.

2. It’s healthy

Unlike extreme sports, the risk of injury is minimal. You might think this is a silly argument, but seriously – I can’t underrate the health benefits of all photo walks I’ve taken. Only owning a dog forces you to leave the house more often in all kind of weather circumstances.

3. It’s fun

Photography doesn’t have to be deadly serious, no photographer has to aspire to be an artist and not every photo has to be a masterpiece. You can play with forms, colors, styles and niches. You can involve friends and collaborate together, having lots of fun.

4. It clears your mind

Going on a photo walk is like stepping into another dimension. When you’re focused on finding interesting compositions, you’re entirely in the moment, free from distractions. For me, it’s a bit like meditation, and after every walk, regardless of the results, my endorphin levels are sky-high, and my stress level is much lower.

5. It’s accessible to everyone

…for anyone with a phone in their pocket (so basically everyone). Contrary to what you might think, it doesn’t require a change of location or travel. Timeless, important, and above all beautiful photos can be taken in your own home or backyard.

6. It helps you grow

Photography develops you in many ways. It trains your brain, opens your eyes and mind, and acts as a catalyst for sensitivity and curiosity. When simple snapping is no longer enough, it pushes you to think creatively. It broadens your horizons, motivates searching for inspiration, and stimulates thinking out of the box. It literally opens your eyes to the world and increases awareness.

7. It sparks creativity

It is something we encourage children to do, but as adults, we often tend to forget maintaining it. Yet it’s something very important for our well-being, both physical and mental. In a world where we often only consume and are encouraged to consume, creating helps maintain a healthy balance.

8. It builds relationships

I’m not sure how things are in communities like DIY enthusiasts or hobbyist tomato growers, but I’d bet that none are as well-organized as photographers. Social media are their major networking platforms, and friendships and connections lasting years often form around this shared passion.

9. It stops time

Everything passes, and time is the fastest and most irreversible thing that slips away through our fingers. But photography can freeze moments, emotions, and even people – on a screen or a piece of paper. And even when memory fades over time, those few million pixels or a print remain.

10. It connects you to your local surroundings

Taking photos regularly in your neighborhood makes you notice details you’d normally overlook. Suddenly, the same places take on a new dimension. What seemed ordinary becomes beautiful. What appears unchanged reveals subtle differences in different weather conditions.
